Week 1

After seeing these videos, I was most impressed with the story shared by Cakes Da Killa, and at the same time it was the most profound. Cakes Da Killa told us about his childhood growing up in New Jersey and being gay in the hip-pop world, and shared some of his own thoughts and opinions. This is an inspirational but a bit sad story.

As a gay, Cakes Da Killa’s childhood experience was full of ups and downs. He had already started rap during school, but did not have creative freedom. He had already started rap during school, because he was told by his classmates that homosexuals can't rap, he wrote some rhymes to diss straight people. In the eyes of heterosexual children, homosexuality is heterogeneous, special or even inferior. Maybe those naive children who have not yet formed a worldview didn’t intentionally hurt him, but the environment, inherent ideas, and surrounding public opinion made them prejudice against homosexuality and made maliciousness deeply rooted in their hearts. Their words and actions caused harm to the young Cakes Da Killa.

Fortunately, Cakes Da Killa is a child with a strong heart. It is precisely because of his inner strength and firmness that he has not been devastated in the whirlpool of verbal attacks. He is firm in heart, self-confident, and always believes that he is not wrong, so he has not been easily defeated. I don’t know if anyone helped Cakes Da Killa during his difficult growth road, but what is certain is that he is the true hero on the difficult road of equal rights struggle and he really saved himself. If he does not have enough confidence and courage, no one can save him from malice.

I think that no matter when, we must be our own heroes, we should not easily compromise with anyone to society. When we encounter injustice, we must also know that it is not ourselves but society that is at fault. At the same time, I also hope that we can treat queer as equals and not become an accomplice to harm them with words and behaviors.

  1. I think acknowledging that some of the young kids being partially/possibly naiive about what they're saying or doing to bully Cakes Da Killa is important when thinking about being strong in your own character as he was from a very early age.
As he talked about his experiences growing up gay I loved hearing the interviewer get more frustrated that it wasn't a sensational sob story. I think it is so sad to realize how much sensationalizing BIPOC and queer stories are eaten up if they're super traumatic, but once they're not full of traumatic stories and "boring", white people just kind of disregard it or get frustrated it isn't more entertaining.
I loved music video too, so fun
