Week 8

The movie, Mysterious Skin, starts with the different lives of two boys. The two seemingly unrelated people finally evoke a sad past. I watched the movie this week with a frown. I don't know if it's because of the difference in culture from mine. The work after Neil grew up as a teenager also made me feel a pity, and not to mention the things he was instigated to do when he was a child. The whole movie feels very depressing to me, I feel that Neil actually wants to escape from that kind of life. However, on the day he became a waiter, he still did the same thing as before. This is something I don't understand.

Until Neil came home from New York to meet Brian that I felt that this story was different from what I thought. I originally thought that the coach truly liked Neil, but after hearing Neil talk about what happened to them and Brian when they were young, I realized that this coach is a pervert. I especially feel sorry for the two little boys. One was instigated to do the wrong thing, hurting others and also hurting himself, and the other suffered something that shouldn't have been suffered at that age.

So, after watching this movie, I became even more worried. Because many people now tell little girls how to protect themselves and how to avoid being harmed by bad guys (men), but no one tells little boys to protect themselves, and no one tells children to be careful of adults of the same sex. Adults of the same sex are more likely to be "ignored".

  1. I like your idea of how boys are not educated to protect themselves.
